Prayers of the People
December 18, 2016
On this fourth Sunday of Advent as we await the coming of our Savior in mercy and majesty, let us pray to his Father for the Church, the world, and for all people according to their need.
Faithful Lord, You keep Your promises, even when it seems impossible to us. Enable us to trust that with You all things are possible, even a virgin conceiving, bearing a Son Who is God with us. Help us to live as Advent people – waiting and expecting Jesus. Keep our minds open to his entry into every moment of our lives. Then let us share this Advent spirit with all those around us. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.
Faithful Lord, continue to bless your church here at New Beginnings and the church universal as Christians around the world join now in the celebration of your perfect gift and his humble entry into this world. Keep us always faithful to your unchanging Word, and help us put the Word into action through preaching, teaching, service to others near and far; and doing whatever work we are called to in your Name. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.
Faithful Lord, we pray for peace where there is conflict and hate among people in the world. Bring your comforting peace to those whose lives are torn by apart by prejudice, greed, violence and hopelessness. We pray for our nation and its leaders, especially during this time of divisive ideas and actions. Grant those who govern the nation see your purpose and be willing to follow it. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.
Faithful Lord, thank you for people who choose lives of service, especially members of our military, police officers, fire fighters and medical professionals. Many of them are away from home or on duty as we celebrate the birth of your Son. May you be with all of them and their families as they serve our society, and may we follow their example in using our talents to serve others. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.
Faithful Lord, comfort your people who are hurting today: Those who are suffering in mind, body and soul; those in pain, who are hungry and those who live in sadness and despair. Even at this joyous time of year we know that some of your children are suffering – some openly and some secretly, but there are no secrets from you. Be with each of those on our prayer list, lifted up in our personal petitions and spoken this day. Remind us to remain faithful to the promise You will never leave nor forsake us. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.
Faithful Lord, we thank You for the gift of Baptism. We ask your blessing on Charlie and Henry baptized into your family. Hold them in your arms and bless them. Shine your light on the path before them and let them always feel your loving presence as they travel along the paths of life. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.
Faithful Lord, let us hear again the message that Jesus our Savior, Immanuel, God with us, is born. Let this Good News take root, grow, and bear fruit in our lives, today and throughout the coming days. Amen.
