Prayers of the People- week of August 7

Prayers of the People
August 7, 2016

A principal obligation and privilege of being a Christian is to pray regularly. We have that opportunity right now. May we remember we never pray alone, for whenever we pray we join the prayer of the entire Church on earth and in heaven. Let us join together during this time of prayer adding our voices to the many throughout the world.

Lord God, adorn your Church with faith as lovely as the lilies of the field, and as steadfast as Abraham and the patriarchs. Remind us constantly that our treasures are not found in buildings, bank accounts, or any other material property but instead our treasures are stored up for us in heaven and are found in the hearts and souls of those whom you have loved, forgiven and redeemed. May we seek wealth of spirit through faith and action. Focus all eyes and hearts to watch for the coming of the Son of Man, the treasure beyond measure. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Lord God, we thank you for this place, where we may worship you fully and freely. Help us to appreciate that freedom and not take you for granted. Bless our national church body, sister congregations and companion synods around the world. Fix their eyes firmly on the treasures of heaven which you have stored up for those who love you. Be the strength and shield of all who suffer because they claim Christ as Lord. Soften the hearts of their enemies and turn them to repent. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Lord God, help to love and forgive one another as you love and forgive us. In those instances, where that is most difficult for us, remind us that you love those who need our forgiveness the same as you love us and as those who forgive us. Be that strength and shield of those who serve in the military, and of all who risk their life in defense of others – especially Alex and Keegan. Grant that they may always act with wisdom and integrity. When their work is done, let their bodies and minds be healed and refreshed and their service be honored. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Lord God, send your Spirit abroad in the world, so that people in every land may say, “Happy is the nation whose God is the Lord; he is our strength and shield.” Bless our leaders in government, social organizations, community, and our churches. Give them wisdom, strength, and perseverance to do what is pleasing in your sight and in accordance with your will. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Lord God, watch over the many struggling in mind, body or soul due to affliction or sorrow for any reason. We ask that they receive your healing and forgiving power through your Holy Spirit. Especially we remember those who have been named aloud or silently in our hearts. Make your presence known to these, as well as those we may have omitted, but are known to you, and give us the strength, insight, and compassion to use our gifts as your hands in bring your healing. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Lord God, thank you for the amazing teachers who have given their lives to serve our children. As they prepare for the new year, fill them with strength to lead, grace to guide and hope to thrive in their classroom. Bless them beyond measure for their willingness to pour into the next generation through the next generation through education. And open the minds of each student, young and old, to the blessing and opportunity of education. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Lord God, help us to be in our daily lives the Christian example that brings others to you, with Jesus as our guide. Help us to freely follow and proclaim your Holy Name in the coming days and week. All these things we lay at your feet confident in your grace and mercy. Amen.
