Prayers of the People — February 16, 2014

Trusting in the steadfast goodness and mercy of God the Father as revealed in the light of his Son Jesus Christ, we pray for the Church, the world, and all people according to their need.

O Lord, our God, we profess ourselves eager for the blessings of an ordered society, where trust and peace flourish. Yet we turn from your commandments, through which you give those blessings. So often your children stray and believe they know what is best. When not heeding Your Direction and wisdom, there is conflict over peace, death rather than life. Loosen the hold sin has on our wills, and conform our minds to that of your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, so that we may, through the aid of your Holy Spirit, choose life, love you, obey you, and hold fast to you and to Your truth. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Give your Church, pastors, leaders, and members the heart of a servant, Help us all too happily devote ourselves to the needs of the afflicted, the poor, the desolate and those buried by their own sin. Create and sustain in us the need to know you better, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly so that we maybe a witness of your love and mercy in our homes and community. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.
Lord Jesus, as you grew in favor with the heavenly Father, you too faced the temptations of youth. We thank for Your example of trust in His grace and mercy. Please be with the youth as they face the trails and temptations of the world around them. Fill them with the joy and assurance of Your presence every moment of the day. Enable them to look to You for guidance in all areas of life. And we as adults of all ages, never forget that you are forever faithful and that we can trust and depend on Your help and guidance as we face hard times and that You also rejoice with us in the Good Times. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

You give the nation’s leaders that they might act on Your behalf for the good of all your children in every corner of the earth. Yet they are overcome by quarrelsome behavior and division, and the citizens of their lands suffer under their leadership. Unite those who govern under your righteous sovereignty, give them a common purpose, and a willingness to use their authority, power, and wealth to build up the communities they govern, May they lead with integrity, honesty, and honor. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Father in heaven, we read your Word and we tremble, for you call us to a perfection we are unable to achieve. Because of anger, discord, and our not loving our neighbors as ourselves, we need soldiers, police, and ambulance crews, EMTs, and others that are in service to others and are often placed in harm’s way. Protect all who shield us from harm and may they receive respect and safety, so that they might bring peace even to those whose will is bent on destruction. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Gracious God, we pray for the sanctity of marriage. Bless all marriages with joy and with the strength to withstand the many pressures on the faithfulness of husband and wife to one another. Most of all, help them to ask forgiveness when they sin against one another, and to offer willingly, without reservation, the same forgiveness when their spouse sins against them. In this troubles world, there are broken relationships that cause pain and discord. Teach us all to forgive as you forgive us and let there be healing. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

In you, Father, we have life, and through you we have all we need to sustain life. Our bodies are wondrously made, yet even so they fail, and we cry out to you for healing, comfort, and strength. Lift up all laid low by illness, accident, addiction, or happenstance. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Strengthen them in their afflictions, and bring them the comfort of your loving presence, and grant healing of body and spirit according to Your will.

Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy; through Jesus Christ your Son, our Lord. Amen
